Woodworking is Helping Me Overcome Health Problems

 

The George and the Dragon Icon displayed to the left was my first project I tackled after suffering a stroke October 2012.

 

The stroke left me with a whole host of legacy health problems. I started to use the scroll saw as a form of exercise for my right hand and shoulder. I also found scrolling to be effective against the black depression that stroke victims often suffer.

 

It was slow going as I could only safely use the scroll saw when I felt right within myself. Gradually the cutting session got longer as my brain learned to redirect instructions to my hand and shoulder away from the destroyed parts of my brain.

 

Today coordination is still not perfect and when a brain signal is misdirected comical results can occur.

 

The icon took until December 2013 to finish and I gave it to my son as a Christmas present.

 

July 2014 I was hit by another stroke and spent 2 weeks in the hospital.

 

I've got a feeling that recovery from this one will be problematic.
