OMS Polytunnel Research & Development Project Ideas

Aim

The aim of the project is to provide an amount of freshly harvested free produce grown by volunteers using the OMS Polytunnel & Allotments to the community of Omagh.

Objective

The objective is to utilise the new Polytunnel that OMS is going to erect in late June or early July 2017 and make it an all year round resource for the local community of ALL ages, religions, races, genders etc and experiences levels.

Reason Why

The funding to buy the polytunnel and fixtures has been provided by NI Housing Executive's Community Fund. I would like to thank the Housing Executive for giving me a project to get my teeth into and continue my integration into the Omagh community as part of my rehabilitation.

Ideas and Methods

Generally, all plants need three things. Water, light and nutrients-soil (well air to obviously). The Polytunnel will be constructed on a gravel, stone hardcore base. Therefore we will face a number of challenges and problems in the initial set-up stage to make the Polytunnel a viable long term growing area. However, I will NEED HELP in constructing, maintaining, recording and harvesting any produce. Volunteers should use the contact form for any enquiries or for volunteering..

Installing Sub-Irrigated Planters (SIPs)

This system can yield amazing results while reducing workload throughout the growing season. The self-watering or wicking beds can take a variety of shapes and forms. From buckets to totes to large-scale raised beds, the possibilities are endless!

Of course, you may have seen fundamental differences in the basic construction of SIP garden beds. One popular technique is to construct the reservoir from corrugated, perforated drain pipes. But an alternate approach is to use a bed of gravel or even sand or perlite as the reservoir base. Which is better?
